Steve Bug Bio
A dedicated, energetic and constantly surprising talent, Steve Bug is nothing less than an electronic music ambassador. Resident Advisor once called Steve Bug the “Gentleman of Techno” referring to his sense of duty and dependability as one of the world’s most renowned DJs and producers. The same professionalism that means he’s hardly ever missed a DJ gig is evident in his work as a composer, producer and owner of the Poker Flat Recordings label. Every step he takes is well considered, but always tempered with his own fine humour.
Having grown up in Germany’s techno and acid-house heyday, Steve Bug’s love for a perfect groove is as apparent now as it was back then. His DJ skills and a keen, innovative ear led him not down the typical path of the early nineties trance and harder dance scene, but instead towards a fresher, hybrid sound–merging stripped deep house, tweaked out acid and more minimal forms of techno and electronic music.
His international breakthrough was his fourth studio long player Sensual in 2002, which, followed by the essential Bugnology mix series along with high profile mix CDs for Cocoon, Fabric, Fuse and more, continued to rouse support for Steve’s in-demand DJ style, propelling his career to new heights.
With annual label compilations, a variety of artist albums, and new concepts like the Forward to the Past series, Steve Bug continues to steadily develop his Poker Flat label. In the Spring of 2012, he hosted the first official Poker Flat events in London and Barcelona to critical acclaim. Since, he has taken Poker Flat further afield, with the Big Bluff event series stopping off in cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, London, Tokyo and Berlin.
With over 80 releases, at least 40 remixes, plus compilations and over 500 release credits, it would be difficult to think of Steve Bug as anything less than prolific. Ever driven by the hunger to break new grounds Steve Bug presented his fifth studio album Noir in 2012.
Steve continued his upward trajectory throughout 2014, notably celebrating 15 years of Poker Flat Recordings. With such a wealth of material to look back on, the anniversary provided the perfect opportunity for something of a retrospective. The Four Jacks series compiled exclusive, unreleased tracks and remixes by label associates, putting a contemporary spin on some Poker Flat classics. Steve also made a welcome return to his 10 year dormant Traffic Signs alias, releasing the floor-filling and infectious 'Cookie Jar' with Jake The Rapper on vocals. After so long in business, it's a testament to Steve Bug's unwavering vision that the Poker Flat name remains at the cutting edge of dance music.
DoubtingThomas Biography
With a tireless work ethic and a focus on creation rather than infamy, Aurelien Riviere may be one of the best-kept secrets of the European house and techno scene. His rise as DoubtingThomas has been a slow and steady one, with releases on key underground labels and prestigious residencies confirming what those in the know already understand; that this is an artist worth paying attention to.
While he has been producing since the 90s when he was exploring downtempo trip hop and ambient sounds, DoubtingThomas has been continuously immersing himself in a wide range of styles that all feed into the more dancefloor focused material he works on today. During his time spent in London throughout the 00’s he developed a live set which has become one of the key channels for his creative energy. Meanwhile he scored releases on labels such as Soul Jazz, Safari Electronique, Lessizmo:r and Adjunct Audio amongst others at the peak of minimal techno’s creativity. Besides this more personal work he composes music for Universal Publishing and Cezame Music Agency in a commercial capacity.
His sound has always drawn upon wider influences than cookie-cutter dancefloor music, reaching to jazz and musique concrete to find textures that challenge in between the rhythms, and so it is that his distinctive live set has become his calling card in recent times. With recent tours taking him to the likes of Arma in Moscow, Rex Club in Paris and across the US, audiences around the world have been awoken to the distinctive DoubtingThomas sound. It’s the same kind of unique spirit that he brings to his DJing, taking chances to present a crowd with an alternative to the straight and narrow rules of so much club music.
While the performances keep on rolling, Aurelien is also investing his considerable energy into a multitude of recording projects from his current base in Berlin, continuing a thread started with the downtempo collaborative project D.O.T.S he began in London and moving it away from a jazz leaning to more experimental pastures under the AKHOXET banner.
Alongside that venture he has a spread of releases planned, including more than one album in the works. As previously stated, the restless approach to his craft promises great things on the horizon for DoubtingThomas.
